Evaluation of the NOM-035 Smart Manager: A System for Identifying the Psychological Risk Factors Levels of University Academics

Stress, commonly known by medical specialists as the silent killer, is the feeling of being unable to cope with mental or emotional pressure. The academic environment is reported to have high-stress levels due to their responsibilities. In particular, university academics demand more preparation and have to show commitment to their academic trajectory. In 2018, the Official Mexican government issued the Norm NOM-035-STPS-2018 focused on establishing the elements to identify, analyze and prevent psychosocial risk factors, and promote a favorable organizational environment in the workplace. This paper presents the NOM-035 Smart Manager, a system to support the application of the Norm NOM-035 for identifying the level of psychosocial risk factors in university academics, and it provides recommendations according to the risk factors levels. We evaluated the system with academic and HR staff from a public university. Our results show that the NOM-035 Smart Manager system has the potential to be integrated into the university systems as a diagnostic and monitoring tool for the psychological risk factors levels of academics.
