Predicting short- and long-term renal function following partial and radical nephrectomy

•The Mayo clinic model for the prediction of short-term renal failure after partial and radical nephrectomy showed good accuracy upon the external validation in our cohort.•We developed prediction models based on preoperatively available patient and tumor factors for the estimation of the long-term postoperative renal function following partial and radical nephrectomy.•Long-term postoperative renal function prediction models rely mostly on host factors as opposed to tumor complexity.•Renal function prediction models can aid in both preoperative patient counseling as well as clinical decision-making when considering partial versus radical nephrectomy.
