•Detrital zircons of trench sediments reveal the evolution of the Proto-Tethys Ocean.•The Proto-Tethys initially northward subducted at ∼535 Ma, and closed at ∼441 Ma.•Crustal thickness positively correlated with the amount of arc magmatism.
