Fully coating of Mg3B2O6 in nonaqueous solution on Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 secondary particles to improve cycling stability of lithium-ion batteries

•Mg3B2O6 is used as coating material for surface modification of Ni-rich NCM cathode material.•Coating strategy was designed with oxidative property of NCM surface to prepare a complete film.•The composite exhibits better long-term cycling stability than reported similar coated materials.•Simple operation and low coat of non-toxic/polluting Mg3B2O6 has large potential for application.
