•Spatial mapping relationship between the substrate and porous anodic alumina was obtained using scratch marking.•Aluminum substrate grain boundaries results in longitudinal disarranged growth in porous anodic alumina.•The size of longitudinal disarranged growth region depends on the grain boundary misorientation.
