Macro/mesofracture and instability behaviors of jointed rocks containing a cavity under uniaxial compression using AE and DIC techniques

•The effect of the opening and two parallel joints on acousto-optic-mechanical characteristics was discussed.•The crack initiation, propagation and coalescence of a cavity in a jointed rock mass were identified by AE and DIC techniques.•The crack coalescence patterns are described and failure modes were identified.
