•Tx-EST1 is a feruolyl esterase from Thermobacillus xylanilyticus.•The enzyme is thermotolerant and has a high optimum temperature.•A range of prebiotic feruolyated xylo-oligosaccharides was produced and characterised.•Has activity against feruolated oligosaccharides and insoluble complex substrates.
