摘要

•Mucosal microbial community display anatomical site-specific features in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with and without HPV infection.•Enrichment of Fusobacterium in oral cavity SCC (OSCC) was associated with patients with no traditional risk factors of smoking, alcohol and HPV, and surprisingly had a significantly improved 3-year disease-specific survival.•High risk HPV is only a key etiology in oropharyngeal SCC.
