•SF6 capture and separation of COFs are studiedexperimentally and theoretically.•Surface area is the major contributor to SF6 uptakes.•Pore size at ca. 0.9 nm is the optimal value for achieving high SF6/N2 selectivity.•RCOF-1 exhibited outstanding performance on SF6 capture and separation.
