•Reducing length–width ratios can improve smoke and heat exhaust efficiencies.•The ratio less than 1:3 is recommended for the natural venting design.•The exhausted gas is smaller when shaft shape is the frustum of prism or cone.•The exhausted smoke of cylindrical shaft is slightly larger than that of cube.
