Fire severity and pre-fire forest composition affect Northern Hawk Owl presence in burned forests in western North America

•Positive relationship between hawk owls and older, burned deciduous forest.•Higher occurrence in young, low severity and older, high severity post-fire forest.•Hawk owl detections were highest in the morning.•Management of post-fire deciduous patches important at the home range scale.
