摘要
•Heart murmur is a common reason for referral for transthoracic echocardiogram.•The correlation between murmurs by auscultation and severity of heart valve disease by echocardiography is generally poor.•However, a careful auscultation of the heart is an effective screening and diagnostic tool, and should be routinely performed prior to the echocardiogram.•A careful auscultation may predict/guide echocardiographic findings and their interpretation in view of the clinical information in every individual patient.•The echocardiogram may clarify the diagnosis and provide a guide to the severity of the haemodynamic consequences.
