Sex differences in the prognostic value of troponin and D-dimer in COVID-19 illness

•Male sex was associated with higher odds of severe COVID-19 illness and higher levels of troponin, but lower levels of initial D-dimer.•Sex did not modify the association between troponin and severe COVID-19, but did modify the association between peak D-dimer and severe COVID-19 illness.•D-dimer may have greater prognostic value for male patients with COVID-19 infection, and future studies on COVID-19 and thrombosis should assess sex as an important biological variable.
