•Most studies on guilt in alcohol use are cross-sectional design conducted on non-clinical samples.•Guilt typology used is rarely defined in researches.•Numerous studies found a protective role of guilt proneness in alcohol (mis)use.•State guilt appears to be deleterious to alcohol (mis)use.•The link between guilt and alcohol use disorder is inconsistent.
