Safety and Availability Considerations in a Triple Modular Redundant Time Diverse System with Over-Voltage Detection

In this paper, an analysis is done for safety and availability considerations in a Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) communication channel that is subjected to a multi-harmonic electromagnetic disturbance under reverberation conditions. Time diversity is used as an EM-resilience measure along with over-voltage detection in order to incorporate fault tolerance in the system design. The study shows that combining over-voltage detection with an EM-resilience measure like time diversity is quite effective in dealing with Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) induced failures over a broad range of Signal-to-Interference Ratios (SIR). The results show a considerable reduction in failure probability and a marked improvement in fault tolerant capacity.
