•Film-phase PAE could capture benzyl alcohol significantly from the air.•Partition coefficients of VOC in PAE films are over ten times larger than Koa.•Molecular dynamics simulation results agreed well with VOC adsorption experiments.•Hydrogen bonds are detected between benzyl alcohol and PAE molecules.
