A home visit program for low-income African American children with asthma: Caregivers' perception of asthma triggers and a gap in action

•A home visit program for low-income asthmatic children showed the need for providing healthier homes.•Home environments were suboptimal for inner-city African American children with asthma with the presence of at-home triggers.•Knowledge about home triggers and caregivers’ and property owners’ actions and efforts to mitigate these triggers were inadequate.
