•Minipigs are an excellent animal model for insertion of commercial cochlear implants.•Comparable dimensions to humans present an advantage for translational research.•Cochlear implantation trauma in minipigs leads to functional deafness.•Slight hearing recovery can be observed after a two-month follow-up period.•Scalar fibrous tissue development can be effectively monitored in minipigs.
