The type IVa major pilin PilA plays a role in bacterial colonization, virulence, twitching motility, and the uptake of extracellular DNA. The type IV prepilin homolog PilA of the periodontal pathogen A. actinomycetemcomitans (AaPilA) is linked to DNA uptake and natural competence.
