•M. maripaludis can survive by utilizing 316L SS as an energy source.•The electron transfer relies on the redox-active substances from M. maripaludis.•M. maripaludis causes pitting corrosion of 316L SS.•Corrosion of 316L SS is promoted with decrease of acetate concentration.
