•Design and synthesis of 16 1,3,5-triazine-quinoline hybrids.•The new compounds were evaluated for cholinesterases inhibitory activity.•Compound 5 g revealed the highest butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activity.•Docking study showed that compound 5 g interacted with the active site of butyrylcholinesterase.
