Nonsuicidal self-injury in undergraduate students: a cross-sectional study and association with suicidal behavior

•This is the first study about non-suicidal self injury among brazilian students.•A total of 6.906 undergraduate students took part in the study.•The prevalence of non-suicidal self injury was 17.8% among brazilian students.•There was a ten times greater risk of suicidal behavior among self-injurers.•The risk of suicidal behavior was higher still for recurrent self injury.
