Association between body mass index change and mortality in critically ill patients: A retrospective observational study

•Increased body mass index during an intensive care unit stay is related with elevated mortality.•Body mass index change is vital for patients with higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation IV score and longer intensive care unit stay among critically ill patients.•A more balanced nutrition strategy may be more beneficial to patients in the intensive care unit.
