•We maximize light-routing in periodic diffraction gratings by shape optimization.•A Helmholtz equation with a Robin-to-Robin map models the wave propagation.•A transfinite interpolation formula represents the grating's curved shape.•Shape derivatives are determined using an exact discrete adjoint method.•The numerical optimization algorithm produces slab designs with superior performance.
