•Public reporting of the outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention is associated with risk-aversion attitudes and behaviors.•Do major adverse events influence case selection for percutaneous coronary intervention in nonpublic reporting environments?•More than 250,000 procedures and 931 major adverse events were included in this analysis.•Major adverse events had no impact on case selection for percutaneous coronary intervention in veterans affairs cardiac catheterization laboratories.•Nonpublic reporting environments may mitigate percutaneous coronary intervention risk-aversion behaviors.
