Peaking carbon emissions under a coupled socioeconomic-energy system: Evidence from typical developed countries

•Coupling between two systems in typical countries having peaked emissions is measured.•Influencing mechanism of coupling between two systems on emission peaking process is explored.•A consistency lies in the trends in comprehensive coupling level and emissions.•The best coupling state for two systems boosts the emission peak.•Insights on achieving emission peak considering system interactions are provided.
