Merchant shipping is a vulnerable target exposed to a plethora of cyberattacks. Security incidents onboard ships depict the significant problems that negatively effect the operation of embedded technologies. This work presents specific features in a vessel’s network architecture related to cybersecurity issues, studies and exposes vulnerable points, threats and risks on merchant shipping, discusses risk assessment and threat management, identifies affected parts connected with corresponding threats and provides a framework of best practices to secure a vessel’s network and maintain the vessel’s safety.
