Contributions of anoxic microsites to soil carbon protection across soil textures

•All soil textures and moisture contents supported anoxic microsites.•Anoxic microsite abundance and protection of soil C was greatest in coarser soils.•Anoxic protection of soil C was greater in soils with higher moisture content.•Anoxically protected C is vulnerable to aeration via physical disturbance.
