•Addition of N was associated with increased concentrations and distribution patterns of Zn and S in wheat grain.•N was associated with enhanced Zn-S co-localization in Zn-cysteine speciation and lower Zn-P colocalization of Zn-phytate.•N was associated with mitigated adverse effects of P on Zn concentrations.
