Automatic spatial calibration of freehand ultrasound probe with a multilayer N-wire phantom

•Multilayer N-wire phantom for performing ultrasound image calibration.•A dense N-fiducial set is constructed to increase the effective N-fiducials.•Few images for calibration without any manual image processing.•Calibration quality is better than the triple N-wire phantom.
