•Pd single atoms supported over UiO-66-NH2 was created.•DFT calculations reveal the support can provide anchoring sites for Pd atoms.•This catalyst shows high catalytic efficacy in Suzuki coupling reaction.•The high catalytic activity stems from electronic metal-support interaction.
