•A novel iterative approach is proposed to retrieve the soot temperature and volume fraction of sooting flames.•A self-absorption correction strategy is established with an aid of hyperspectral imaging.•Numerical simulations are carried out to evaluate the proposed approach.•A hybrid hyperspectral video imaging technique is designed and implemented.•The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated through ethylene/air diffusion flames.
