Growth mechanisms of large, faceted crystals grown from solutions

•Growth features observed in-situ on the surfaces of multi-faceted large crystals grown from solutions.•Experiments enabled identification of the dislocation and two-dimensional (2D) growth mechanisms.•Results showed that the same crystal may grow selectively by the dislocation or 2D mechanism on different facets.•The 2D mechanism may prevail in organic crystals at any low supersaturation and in the presence of dislocation.
