A Modular Sensor System Design for Instrumental Odor Monitoring

This article describes a modular design approach for gas sensor systems to be used as Instrumental Odor Monitoring Systems (IOMS). Due to the variety of relevant application scenarios, a scientific sound yet cost-efficient way to adapt the IOMS is key to commercial use. Modularity does not only relate to the hardware setup, but also must be extended to firmware, software, and visualization methods. The concept has been successfully showcased in various applications, examples of which are shown in the results chapter. Implications for calibration methods are presented and current work on extending the system is outlined.
