•By coupling the heat transfer and flow equations with the Stefan condition, a numerical model that can predict the kinetics of the fuel solid-vapor interface during migration process is proposed.•The typical situations of ice migration under different thermal environment conditions are studied.•The specific schemes of ice generation and preservation are put forward.
