•Amino-GQDs protected catechol structure and expanded antioxidant capacity of PDA.•The synergistic antioxidant effect was ascribed to increased catechol structure.•GQD/PDA coating with more catechol groups exhibited higher reducibility.•GQD/PDA-HAp coating reduced intracellular ROS and protected osteoblast from H2O2.
