Automated detection of gunshots in tropical forests using convolutional neural networks

•We trained a machine learning model to identify gunshot sounds in tropical forests.•We combined this model with a detector that runs onboard the acoustic recorder.•Our pipeline detected 80% of gunshots.•We used our pipeline to monitor hunting in a Belizean forest reserve.•We published our annotated dataset of field recordings and the trained classifier.
