Heat transfer in pipes with twisted tapes: CFD simulations and validation

•Enhanced heat transfer mechanisms are numerically simulated with Ansys Fluent®.•Experimental correlations are compared against CFD simulations for different models.•CFD models adequately describe turbulence inside twisted tape inserts.•Wall treatments are more relevant than turbulent models when studying heat transfer.•Models predict different temperature and velocity profiles for the same conditions.
