•The crude mucus fraction extracted by the zoanthid P. caribaeorum increases mucin production.•CFZM protects the duodenum with changes in the quantification of goblet cells, area, and perimeter of the duodenal villi.•CFZM increases the gene expression of MCU1 and MUC5a.
