Electrolytic Bubble Phenomena in an Underwater Discharge

Dense hydrogen bubble plumes have been observed in a point to plane underwater discharge. The plumes originate from hydrogen bubble formation due to electrolysis. In this work, we explore the interaction of the bubble plumes with underwater streamers originating at the powered electrode. A fast camera is used to capture the interaction and image the bubbles. Here we also present bubble size distribution and report on its sensitivity to peak voltage and water conductivity. Bubble shrinkage phenomena as well as dynamical behavior in the presence of the discharge is also reported. This work ultimately aims to develop additional insight into underwater discharge propagation dynamics.
