•MPCM slurry viscosity and thermal conductivity affect its heat transfer.•Spraying MPCM slurry weakens the above-mentioned adverse effects.•The working and phase change temperature ranges of the used MPCM slurry are matched.•Faster cooling yields more supercooling and a wider phase change temperature range.•Heat–mass transfer is better for MPCM slurry than for sprayed pure water.
