•The application of impact-echo method was extended to frozen concrete.•The influence of various factors on wave velocity and strength are analyzed.•Wave velocity-strength correlations of frozen concrete were obtained.•A method for evaluating on-site concrete strength in winter was stablished.•A semi-empirical model for assessing ice content by wave velocity was proposed.
