•Valorization of BSG was achieved by pervaporation coupled to subcritical water.•Organophilic membranes allowed selective recovery of furfural.•Removal/recovery of furfural from subW hydrolysates was as high as 94.1 %.•Detoxification by furfural removal allowed cell growth through sugar consumption.
