•High degradation and dechlorination efficiencies of CAP were achieved synchronously using UV/sulfite-ARPs.•Direct UV photolysis and eaq− dominantly contributed to CAP degradation and dechlorination.•Possible degradation pathways of CAP in UV/sulfite-ARPs were proposed.•The biotoxicity of CAP was significantly reduced after treatment with UV/sulfite-ARPs.
