•CN@I was prepared by a simple one-step coprecipitation of CoNi3O4 and illite.•CN@I exhibited high catalytic activity on PMS and low leaching of metal ions.•CN@I/PMS degraded PVA via radicals (•OH and SO4•-) and non-radical (1O2) pathways.•Density functional theory was employed to elucidate catalytic mechanisms.•CN@I/PMS degraded PVA effectively at a wide pH range (3–11).
