Numbers and presence of guarding dogs affect wolf and leopard predation on livestock in northeastern Iran

•Livestock predation by wolves at night decreased by 25.2% with every additional guarding dog.•Dog presence reduced leopard depredation rates during daytime, but did not eliminate it.•Most livestock kills (58%) by wolves occurred in herds kept in corrals at night.
