Mixed forest suffered less drought stress than pure forest in southern Siberia

•Mingling effect in forest responses to drought was conducted in semiarid Siberia.•Conifers showed remarkable consistency in drought tolerance regardless of mingling.•Broad-leaved trees suffer less drought stress in mixed forests.•Decreasing duration of legacy effect with increasing mingling was found.
