•Nature-based human adaptation can increase tidal marsh areal extent by 58%.•Tidal marsh area will peak in the mid of the 21st century.•Human disturbance has negative effect on sediment accretion in tidal marshes.•RSLR and precipitation are the main drivers of surface elevation change.•Hotspots of future marsh loss are largely in North America, Australia and China.
