•Turbulent flow over confined cylinder at various blockage ratios were simulated•Effects of confinement on the flow structures are presented .•The mean flow field is asymmetric at blockage ratio = 0.7.•Analysis show vortex pairing at the shear layers for blockage ratio of 0.3 and 0.7.
