•We examine effects of rumination and distraction on inhibition of negative content.•Habitual rumination was associated with reduced inhibition.•Induced rumination did not affect inhibition.•Distraction improved ruminators' inhibition.•Negative mood mediated the effect of distraction on ruminators' inhibition.
